Andre Akinyele's new album
Telegram Mews comprises his multi-instrumentalist production and features guest appearances by Jon O'Bergh (piano on "Body" and "Call Me") and EFFIIGY (rap vocals on both versions of "Compassion")
.
Telegram Mews is an album that blends funk, pop, R&B, and reggae. This is the follow-up to his full-length critically acclaimed hip-hop album
The Unauthorized Playlist (2016) and includes a re-worked track from that album, "Sky's the Limit (Revisited)". For his twenty-first release—wait what—yes, his twenty-first release since 1989 using different names, including Marcel, Ajamu Akinyele, Gemini Soul, Looking for Lester, and Lavender Lush to name a few, this release is solid and mature. The funk/pop/R&
B/soul singer takes on a cover of Prince's "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" as a tribute to his long-time hero. What isn't known is that Akinyele has been a Prince fan since 1978 and has attended every Prince show since Prince's Controversy Tour. The cover is soulful and layered with vocal harmonies that are at the center of this tech-soul-funk version reminiscent of recording artists D'Angelo and Maxwell.
Telegram Mews is a reflection piece that provides a glimpse into Akinyele's current life with the song "T.O. (Toronto)" and events taking place in the United States with the song "Immigrant". Similar artists include: Prince, D'Angelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu, Kendrick Lamar, and Van Hunt.
