Follow on Google News | United Premier Soccer League Announces City Legends FC as Western Conference Expansion TeamPerris (Calif.)-Based Pro Development Club Joins UPSL for the 2018 Fall Season
By: United Premier Soccer League Based in Perris (Calif.), City Legends FC begins UPSL Championship play in the Western Conference. United Premier Soccer League Commissioner Yan Skwara said, "The Inland Empire region of Southern California produces some of the nation's greatest talents, and we're proud to welcome City Legends FC. The owners are stand-up citizens and community driven. They want the best for their city and they believe in the merit-based UPSL Promotion/Relegation Model. We wish City Legends FC success as their prepare to kick off in the Fall Season." City Legends FC is co-owned by Anthony Perez and Victor Ortega, former prep teammates at Perris (Calif.) Citrus Hill High School. Both went on to play college soccer and now have returned to their hometown to build a club in their own image. City Legends FC Co-Owner Anthony Perez said, "All of us played college soccer and we were mostly the first ones to do it out of Perris, and now it's our turn to help the next generation of soccer players reach the next level, either through college or even by way of a professional contract. We were the legends of this city before and now it's time for the next group because they have the quality and we have the ability to take the next step." "There's great talent in Perris – and the Inland Empire is just amazing for talent – but players don't get out that much. They stay local, maybe play (junior college) and that's it, so we're trying to expand that (and) give kids that have the talent the opportunity to play," said Perez, 26, who played at Cal State San Marcos and previously in the UPSL with now defunct Lake Elsinore (Calif.)-based Chapala soccer club. He currently is a Correctional Deputy in the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Ortega, 28, played at Hillsboro (Kan.)'s Tabor College and now is a Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy. He serves as the club's Director of Communications. "Local players need more opportunities to play competitive soccer, and with the UPSL serving as a stepping stone for players who wouldn't normally be scouted to say, 'Hey, come watch me play either in high school or then with my UPSL team,' because the UPSL is known. College coaches are taking that into consideration. If you're playing in the UPSL and you're getting a lot of playing time and your team is doing well then the right people are going to notice," Perez said. "We want to put a little bit of Perris on the map. Former Citrus Hill High School teammates Javier Reyes and Aram Najar will lead the coaching staff. Reyes, 25, played at Salem (W.Va.)'s International University. He is the team's Head Coach. Najar, 26, played at Tabor College. He is the team's Assistant Coach. The club soon will announce upcoming tryouts and its game schedule.
