LAWRENCE, Mass. - April 26, 2018 - PRLog -- A truly impressive group of 19 decorated scholar-athletes were honored Wednesday night at the Eagle-Tribune Student-Athlete Banquet at Michael's Function Hall in Haverhill.

Charlie Daher and Commonwealth Motors once again sponsored the event and presented the overall Student-Athlete of the Year a $2,000 scholarship.

The winner was chosen from the 19 winners from our 19 area schools. The schools made those selections.

Here are the winners from each area school:

Abby Kobelski, Andover; Ronnie Silva, Bradford Christian; Jordyn Arakelian, Brooks; Casey Thompson, Central Catholic; Malib Pastrana, Greater Lawrence Tech; Meredith Budds, Haverhill; Lisbeth Carpio Del Rosario, Lawrence; Seth Pare, Methuen; Keelin Rogers, North Andover;

Also Nyomi Holmes, Notre Dame Cristo Rey of Lawrence; Cameron Starr, Pelham; Joe Simourian, Phillips Academy; Matthew Newman, Pinkerton; Shakira Henriquez, Presentation of Mary; Alex Tarczon, Salem; Kashief Bogannam, Sanborn; Connor Schott, Timberlane; Andrew Buzzell, Whittier Tech; Thomas Splagounias, Windham

The honorees won a slew of league, region, statewide and New England honors and are headed to a who's who of schools. They include the Naval Academy, Boston College, Boston University, Holy Cross and Villanova.

Boston Marathon Race Director Dave McGillivray of North Andover was the guest speaker. He was a brilliant scholar, too, earning valedictorian honors at Medford High School and Merrimack College.

At the event there was a 6-minute Eagle-Tribune-produced movie based on interviews with the 19 honorees.

Last year's winner was Erick Duffy of North Andover. The high school national champion pole vaulter is now a promising freshman at Harvard. This year's winner was Meridith Budds.

Budds was selected over a tremendous group that included numerous scholarship athletes, three-sport captains, class officers and 1,400-plus SAT students.

Budds will begin her collegiate academics on a pre-med track at St. Anselm College, where she has earned a lacrosse scholarship.

"This definitely means a lot," said Budds, a three-sport captain (lacrosse twice, soccer, indoor track). "It's the best way to cap off my high school career."
