Gutierrez has more than 30 years experience in teaching and high school administration. He currently is vice principal of student affairs at Bellflower's St. John Bosco High School. From 1987 to 2004, Gutierrez taught at Bosco Tech, where he also ultimately served as principal, from 2001 to 2004. He has a bachelor's degree in history from UCLA and a master's degree in education from Stanford University, earning his teaching credential and certification in Catholic school administration at Mount St. Mary's College. He has served on school accreditation self-study and executive search teams and currently is executive board president of Academia Avance Charter School in Los Angeles. In his free time, Gutierrez volunteers with local literacy and nature reserve organizations. Bosco Tech is an all-male Catholic high school that combines a rigorous college-preparatory program with a technology-focused education. The innovative curriculum allows students to exceed university admissions requirements while completing extensive integrated coursework in one of several applied science and engineering fields.
