+ Farm Your Backyard: Vegetable Growing – June 9

+ Orchid Trilogy – July 7, 14 & 21

(West Palm Beach, FL – May 7, 2018) Friends of the Mounts Botanical Garden will be hosting four informative horticultural workshops during June and July, including the return of a popular three-part series on orchids.

Farm Your Backyard: Vegetable Growing

+ Saturday, June 9 – 9 am to Noon

Mounts Exhibit Hall A

$15 for members; $20 for nonmembers

Instructor: Arthur Kirstein, Agriculture Economic Development Coordinator

Learn the secrets of vegetable gardening in South Florida. The focus of this
workshop is to implement successful agricultural techniques to manage
small vegetable projects. Tips and techniques on site preparation, seedling
establishment, planting, maintenance and harvesting will be covered.

Orchid Trilogy:

Orchid Basics

+ Saturday, July 7 – 10 am to pm

Mounts Auditorium

$40 for members; $45 for nonmembers – for each class

$95 for members; $105 for nonmembers – for all three classes

Instructor: Sandi Jones, Broward Orchid Supply

Newcomers to orchids will learn how to choose the correct plants for their growing area and what they need – water, light, fertilizer, temperature, so they grow and flower beautifully. This is the perfect start to exploring the exciting hobby of orchid growing.

(Note: Supplies will be available for purchase following the class.)

Orchid Repotting & Mounting Orchids

+ Saturday, July 14 – 10 am to pm

Mounts Exhibit Hall A

$40 for members; $45 for nonmembers – for each class

$95 for members; $105 for nonmembers – for all three classes

Instructor: Sandi Jones, Broward Orchid Supply

Participants will learn how often an orchid should be repotted and about different potting medias, the proper type of pot or basket to use or how to mount orchids on items such as tree fern or cork. Demonstrations will be given.

Training Your Eye: Orchid Pests & Diseases

+ Saturday, July 21 – 10 am to pm

Mounts Auditorium

$40 for members; $45 for nonmembers – for each class

$95 for members; $105 for nonmembers – for all three classes

Instructor: Sandi Jones, Broward Orchid Supply

Learn about pests and diseases that harm orchids. From bacterial and fungal rots to insects such as thrips, scale, snails and spider mites. Students will learn how to identify culprits, what products to use to get rid of them, as well as what to do to avoid them in the future. Orchid or orchid leaves may be brought in for diagnosis, but must be placed in plastic bags to prevent contaminating other plants.
