Why RAHAT is a Much Needed Initiative ?

Even when we were in school, the education system emphasized a lot on its role and why it is the most important organ present in the body. Even a small irregularity can cause a lot of problems in our life and the way how we deal with it becomes critical. Some serious conditions related to heart are arrhythmia, aortic valve stenosis, failure etc. These should not taken be lightly. One of the most common in this category is Heart attack. Heart attack is a condition in which blood is not able to flow to our heart in a proper manner. This happens due to blockage that ocurs due to blood clots. The treatment of this condition should be immediate and efficient. No time should be wasted in doing this. People living in urban areas do not face any problem in calling an ambulance and getting themselves treated. There are a lot of hospitals which have facilities of treating heart attack but the same cannot be said for rural areas. There are hardly any facilities for them. Even the ambulance takes ages to reach there. This is why RAHAT program in Rajasthan was started.

Rajasthan Heart Attack Treatment Programme (RAHAT) is a medical program started with the primary aim of providing quick and timely treatment during heart attacks in remote and rural areas. This noble initiative was taken by Eternal Hospital with full support from Rajasthan government and inaugurated by the CM of Rajasthan herself – Vasundhara Raje. No life is smaller and less important than other. Everyone deserves good and timely treatment which is a basic right and should be given to everyone.

The main reason why rural areas are lagging behind in medical services is because of the poor connectivity. These places are situated far away from the city and therefore at a loss. A patient of heart attack doesn't have time to lose and even a single minute can be critical. One of the major forms of heart attack is STEMI. It is an abbreviated form of ST-Elevated Myocardial Infraction. In this condition, there is blockage in major arteries of the heart.

These major arteries supply oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart muscle. ST-segment elevation is abnormally detected on the 12 lead ECG. A disease process known as atherosclerosis is generally associated with this disease. Patient who have acute STEMI are at risk of developing life threatening arrhythmias like ventricular fibrillation which causes sudden cardiac arrest. It is also known as massive cardiac arrest.

In RAHAT program, the tele-medicines platform will help capture and transmit patient's EKG along with clinical history from remote geographical locations to the heart command center (HCC) hub, where a team of expert and experienced cardiologists will provide an immediate interpretation of the EKG and real time STEMI guidance and management through tele communication after instantly recognizing the EKG abnormalities.

After Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan has become the second state in the country to launch health programme against heart diseases. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje inaugurated this project on 25th February and while addressing the media and general public, she assured that this project will enhance the medical services in the state and new heights will be touched in healthcare centers.

All the villages in the vicinity of 100 km from Jaipur will be covered. To make sure that this project is the first priority for all, special team members are assigned who visit the location and transmit medical details of the patient along with the information of the EKG to the hub of the Heart Command Centre. This will also lead to decrease in the death rates due to Heart Attack.
