         U.S. Senator Jack Reed

May 14,2018

Greetings:

I join in extending my sincere gratitude to all of the Laotian and Hmong soldiers who fought during the Vietnam War. I would also like to thank their families for their sacrifice and service to the United States as we commemorate the 21st Anniversary of the dedication of the Laos Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery

It is important that we continue to recognize the vital role that these brave soldiers played in the American war effort in Southeast Asia, from helping to rescue downed American pilots to conducting raids along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

In light of these notable contributions, I am proud to have cosponsored the Hmong Veterans' Naturalization Act of 2000, which gave Hmong and Laotian veterans the opportunity to become American citizens. Furthermore, I am pleased that the Hmong Veterans' Service Recognition Act was included in the Fiscal Year 2018 Omnibus appropriations bill. This law, which I supported, will allow Laotian and Hmong-Americans who served in the Vietnam War to be buried in any open national cemetery. This recognition of their service is long overdue and well-deserved.

I join you in remembering and honoring the actions of these brave Laotian and Hmong soldiers during the Vietnam War.

Sincerely

Jack Reed
United States Senator
