Follow on Google News | First Pride Parade in Lawrenceburg Targets SobrietyThe first LGBTQ Pride parade in Lawrenceburg, Indiana was held and the focus of the celebration was sobriety.
By: Addiction Now The organizers of the Lawrenceburg Pride parade, the Ohio River Valley Pride Coalition, promoted providing support and civic advocacy for the local LGBTQ community as well as helping those battling addictions, ending discrimination, and educating people on issues that affect the LGBTQ community. The Pride parade was one of the first to be free of drugs and alcohol in the country due to the disparate rates of substance abuse impacting the LGBTQ communities across the entire nation, the members of the coalition stated. Founder of the Ohio River Valley Pride Coalition, Shelly Snyder said that some sponsors and attendees may have been decided not to go because of they had heard it was a substance-free event, but a number of nonprofits and other corporations were still involved. Snyder said that either way, she would not comprise supporting the LGBTQ community members in recovery from an addiction or in sober living. The approval to host the first Pride parade in Lawrenceburg came earlier in the year, which was a significant accomplishment, she said. Lawrenceburg is located 30 minutes from Cincinnati, has a predominantly Caucasian population of about 5,000 residents, is one of the most conservative, small towns in Indiana. Students from Northern Kentucky University, the University of Cincinnati and other local schools walked proudly to support equality and inclusiveness. A celebration and a drag queen show were held after the parade to gather the hundreds of people who attended the event to support the members of the LGBTQ community. https://www.drugaddictionnow.com/ End
