Follow on Google News | Addiction Treatment in Shelbyville, Ind. Supported by Officials & CommunityBy: Addiction Now Last month, outside of the Shelby County Courthouse a vigil was organized to remember those who have passed away from an opioid use disorder and to promote awareness to the local impact of the opioid epidemic. Lori Springer, executive director at the county's Drug Free Coalition — one of the organizations behind the event — stated that opioids have had a detrimental impact on the Shelbyville County region. The latest statistics released by the state of Indiana show that less than five individuals died of an opioid-related cause in Shelby County from 2008 until 2016. But Springer explained, the numbers do not serve as an accurate portrayal of the impact of opioids on the area. She mentioned that since addiction treatment services lack locally, many people are forced to travel to other places, particularly to the state's metropolitan areas such as Indianapolis, where many often end up not surviving. The fact that first responder had to use naloxone to reverse almost 80 opioid overdoses just during last year is an indication that the opioid-related death toll does not depict the opioid epidemic accurately in Shelby County. Shelby County representatives are now working to improve access to recovery services and increase the number of addiction treatment alternatives that are available locally. Members of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office emphasized that it's not only the number of incarcerations that has increased, but there's also been a rise in the number of all other drug-related charges. https://www.drugaddictionnow.com/ End
