By: Crystal Logic When Maharashtra's people's champion Shri Ajit Pawar first entered the political arena in the state, everyone knew him as the nephew of the powerful NCP Chief Shri Sharad Pawar. However, it's been more than 35 years now since the scion of the Pawar dynasty has been engaged in political, humanitarian and philanthropic work in different parts of Maharashtra, and he has achieved a reputation in the state that is the envy of his peers. Right from his brilliant execution of duties in every portfolio he has been assigned, to his untiring efforts in the improving the irrigation reach to far flung towns and talukas, and the famed Halla Bol or Raise Your Voice campaign that he carried out throughout the state, the people's champion has proved that he does not taken the family name for granted. Shri Ajit Pawar, or Ajit Dada, the common man's name for the leader, has been steadily rising through the ranks in state politics, especially since he chose to make a name for himself instead of resting on the laurels and achievements of his NCP supremo uncle. In an interview with a news channel, the people's champion was once quoted as saying that it is a candidate's work that holds him in good stead. "There might be a one time benefit to someone who hails from a political family. But it is a candidate's work that determines his future in the political arena. Without taking action, I would not have had the people's support that I have today." What distinguishes Ajit Dada, or Big Brother, as he is called, from other political leaders in the state is his attention to the everyday problems of the common man. The people's champion has been making quite a name for himself as a good human being first and a politician later. Twice in the last few months, the leader made news when he voluntarily stopped on the highway to help victims of accidents, putting his own safety in considerable risk. On the 8th of May, Ajit Dada spotted a victim of a road accident on the Mahabaleshwar Panchgani ghat and got him personally escorted to a neighbouring hospital, in his own vehicle. A few weeks later, Shri Ajit Pawar noticed a car filled with five injured passengers on the highway outside Tiroda, near Nagpur, and rushed them to nearby hospitals, thus saving their lives. It requires genuine concern as well as keen eyesight to be able to spot and help an injured motorist on the highway, and in both these incidents, Mr Ajit Pawar showed himself to be a real saviour to the accident victims. In both incidents, the hospital where the victims were taken to had been given specific instructions to ensure that adequate attention was provided to the victims. Considering that many witnesses of road accidents are understandably wary of helping an injured victim due to time constraints and a fear of unnecessary paperwork, the people's champion has set a wonderful example to the common man of putting selfless humanitarian service before personal gain. Within party circles, Shri Ajit Pawar is acknowledged as an outstanding strategist, a judicious administrator, and a visionary in the true sense of the word. His father Anantrao worked for renowned film director V Shanataram, and it is said that Ajit Dada could easily have made a name for himself in Bollywood by following his father's footsteps. Instead, he chose to be a trailblazer for the under represented agrarian community, and become the people's champion. Mr. Ajit Pawar has served Maharashtra in several positions to date, including Minister of State for Agriculture, Horticulture and Power, Minister of Water Resources (Krishna Valley and Konkan Irrigation, three times) and Deputy Chief Minister (September 29, 2012 upto 25 September 2014). The quality that makes Shri Ajit Pawar stand out from among other NCP leaders has always been his straightforward manner and a well earned reputation for getting things done, no matter the odds. It is said that anyone who approaches Ajit Dada for help will never be left wondering: the people's champion has a reputation of either showing the way, or clearly stating the reasons for his inability to support a project. What prompted his immense popularity as the people's leader among the masses is his knack of knowing what work needs to be done, and then wasting no time in taking appropriate action, something that is abundantly clear from even a cursory glance into his own achievements in the state.
