Sober Living Home Hosts Program on Nutrition

PINE BLUFF, Ark. - July 6, 2018 - PRLog -- The Sobriety Living Center held an educational presentation this week on the importance of nutrition.

The nonprofit provides assistance to the local men who are recovering from an alcohol or substance use disorder while they work to transition from an addiction treatment center to a sober lifestyle.

The center has brought in also speakers to tackle subjects related to health and wellness as well as matters such as effective financial management.

The event was led by a member of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, which is offered by the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Members of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program have given similar presentations across other locations including low-income shelters, religious institutions as well as of different schools.

The presentations encourage audience members to get up and become a part of the learning process.

In this week's event, cooking lessons allowed the men to help and attempt to cook for themselves.

About 10 residents were in the audience and got invited to taste one of the dishes that had been made.

The men voiced their thankfulness for being included in the event and for how the sober living home has positively impacted their lives.

The sober living home has brought in many other well-known local officials to speak to the residents.

For example, Pine Bluff Mayor Shirley Washington — an alum of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff — spoke earlier this year at a resource fair about how her office would be actively assisting the Sobriety Living Center residents as they proceed to recover and work to reenter society.

The director of the sober home stated that occasions like the recent presentation series are important tools to help people who are going through the process of recovering from a substance use disorder.
