Follow on Google News | Nate Hendley launches book on Ron MoffattThe Boy on the Bicycle book launch August 14 at Toronto Reference Library
This book looks at Ron Moffatt, a 14-year-old Toronto teenager arrested in September, 1956 for murdering a child on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). Interrogated by police without a lawyer or parent present, Moffatt confessed. He was tried and convicted. The problem was the confession was coerced and Moffatt was innocent. The real killer—sex offender Peter Woodcock—murdered two more children in Toronto before being arrested. In separate trials in the spring of 1957, Woodcock was convicted and Moffatt acquitted. While free, Moffatt never received compensation or an apology. Nor is the public aware of his plight—tried as a juvenile, Moffatt's name was never mentioned in media coverage of his case. This true Toronto crime story involves a fumbled investigation, a false confession and the star lawyer who fought for Moffatt's release. Sources include police files, interviews, original newspaper coverage, reports, books and television documentaries. The Boy on the Bicycle will be released by independent Canadian publisher, Five Rivers. The book can be pre-ordered through the Five Rivers website by v (http://fiveriverspublishing.com/? The official launch takes place August 14, 2018 at Beeton Hall, Toronto Reference Library (789 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario) at 7 pm. The event is free and all are welcome.
