LOS ANGELES - July 31, 2018 - PRLog -- President Trump took much deserved heat and got tons of press attention for his initial tweet after the Charlottesville, Virginia white nationalist rally in August 2017, for not roundly condemning the white nationalists nor even mention them by name for their violent rampage.

What got almost no attention a few days after was a Washington Post-ABC poll that shocked many. It found that a lot of Americans didn't think that holding Nazi or white supremacist views was such a terrible thing. In fact, about 22 million by the poll's count said these views were acceptable. This added up to almost one in ten whites who said that. This alarming percent and numbers was ample proof that the various white nationalist factions were much more than the proverbial handful of kooks, crank, oddballs and crazies typically depicted as.

Political analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson in his new explosive book,Behind Trump and the GOP's White Nationalism, says this belief is a dangerous delusion. Those who purport to hold white nationalist views come in all shapes sizes, ages, and genders. They are not just old, white male, unreconstructed bigots. Many of the men and women who marched in Charlottesville were millennials, and more than a few were college educated.

"White nationalist groups have had a dubious, bizarre, and at times, bloody history.," says Hutchinson, "And in recent times, Trump has had a dubious relationship with them. He has spewed some of their ideology as talking points in tweets and interviews."

Hutchinson examines the odd, lengthy, and violent history of the movement. He notes that Trump's tap dance around the white nationalists was no accident on two counts. The first, as the poll showed, a lot of whites were in sympathy with them, and a lot of them voted. They were more than likely to vote for Trump. The other even more horrific fact was the appalling thought that Trump apart from the violence didn't really perceive any danger from them.

For the more cynical, he might even share some of their views. His political guru for a time, Steve Bannon did share some of their views. He almost certainly wasn't the only one among the Trump entourage who did.

In Behind Trump and the GOP's White Nationalism, Hutchinson  assesses the impact it has had on the racial and cultural wars debate in America. It provides a penetrating and horrifying look at why white nationalism is, and likely will continue to be, a potent force in American life and politics in the present period.
