In 1991 he assisted renowned artist George Segal in the creation of three sculptures for the F.D.R. Memorial in Washington, D.C. His widely published artwork has been included in more than 300 exhibitions and is held in numerous collections, including The New York Historical Society, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, and the Smithsonian Institution (National Museum of American History) in Washington, D.C. The subject of this exhibit is the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade, a mythological honkytonk kickoff to the summer season. Lokuta offers his audience "an alternative to the status quo and an expression of a universal quest to take us out of our everyday life into a world where beauty of another kind reigns and humankind is in harmony with the natural world," (Gustafson). Enough to Swear By is this season's faculty exhibition by Wes Sherman, who teaches acrylic and plein air painting classes and art appreciation at The Center, and leads regular group tours of Chelsea galleries. He is also an adjunct professor of studio arts at William Paterson University, Raritan Valley Community College, and Brookdale Community College and has served as a visiting artist at Temple University, Rutgers University, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. This exhibition features a collection of Sherman's plein air paintings, with an emphasis on storytelling and narrative and the experience of the artist in nature. Sherman explores color and abstraction in distinctive and exciting ways which deftly convey mood and an exceptional sense of place.
