PHOENIX - Aug. 28, 2018 - PRLog -- Join us as the Lounge at {9} debuts Mass Deception: The Weightless World of Just Idle Hands opening First Friday, September 7th, 6-10 PM at {9} The Gallery, 1229 Grand Avenue, Phoenix, AZ. With Mass Deception, Phoenix metalworker and sculptor Just Idle Hands manipulates heavy metals into seemingly-weightless sculpture, transforming alloys into fluid, fragile, and graceful forms that challenge the viewer's perception of weight and mass.

At the age of fourteen, Just Idle Hands got a job sweeping the floor of a body shop in Bisbee, Arizona so he could learn how to fix his vintage Corvette. He was introduced to punk rock, hot rods, and most importantly, learning to rely on his hands, expanding his skill set and perfecting his craft in order to bring his visions to life. Partial owner of a local body shop, he now spends his free time fabricating sculptures, furniture, jewelry, cars, toys, and motorcycles.

"I primarily work with metals and wood, pushing each medium to new limits in exploration of what can be accomplished. With Mass Deception, I wanted to transform structural materials - brass, iron and steel - into unexpected forms, geometric sculptures, flowers, and paper airplanes. The core of each sculpture is constructed from the inside to give the illusion of fluid motion within the negative space and then vividly colored and polished to counter the raw exterior. Yet, if you shine a light through the rippling chaos of the interior, you get a precise, geometric shape on the other end. The roses are crafted from hand- cut and shaped brass, challenging me to retain the fragility of flower petals within the properties of the heavy metal. The paper airplanes are hand-welded pieces of steel, polished to a chrome-like finish. They look like they could soar but when you hold them in your hand, you can really sense the contrast of weight vs. form."

Among his many achievements, Just Idle Hands has done the metal fabrication on award-winning motorcycles for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and his work has been featured in Rod and Custom Magazine, Ol'Skool Rodz, and Hot Rod Magazine. He has painted multiple award-winning G Body models featured in Lowrider Supershows, award-winning hot rods at the Good guys Car Show, and painted the "Best in Show: Import Class" at World of Wheels.

Mass Deception: The Weightless World of Just Idle Hands runs throughout the month of September at {9} The Gallery.
