Newport Beach Law Firm Represents Victim Burned by Exploding E-CigaretteThe personal injury law firm of Bisnar Chase is representing an Orange County man who was burned by an e-cigarette, which exploded in his pocket.
By: Bisnar Chase This incident is just one example of the danger posed by e-cigarettes, said senior partner Brian Chase. "A lot of these e-cigarettes and batteries are made with substandard, cheap parts and put consumers in real danger," he said. "Because these e-cigs are not properly regulated, a number of these dangerous products are out in the market. E-cigarettes are basically like ticking time bombs. When they explode they are like flaming rockets burning everything in their path. What our client went through is frightening." E-cigarettes are typically powered by lithium-ion batteries. They simulate smoking by heating a nicotine-solution into a vapor, which the user then inhales. E-cigarettes are still marketed as alternatives to traditional cigarettes. Manufacturers sell them as a means to wean smokers away from tobacco cigarettes. However, study after study has shown that e-cigarettes are addictive and cause health complications including lung damage. Newer brands such as Juul have proven to be extremely popular and addictive among youth. The number of explosions and fires has been on the rise each year. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, between January 2009 and December 31, 2016, there were 195 separate incidents of explosion and fire involving an electronic cigarette reported by U.S. media. These incidents resulted in 133 acute injuries, and of these injuries 29 percent were severe. About 62 percent of the incidents involving e-cigarette fires and explosions occurred when the device or battery was in a pocket or actively in use. Chase said these companies are putting profits before the safety and well being of unsuspecting consumers. "Across the country and the world, there have been numerous reports of these devices exploding and catching fire causing property damage and catastrophic injuries such as burns, loss of vision, brain injury, and even deaths," he said. "It is time to hold these manufacturers accountable for their negligence and reckless disregard for public safety."
