Kate DiCamillo's writing journey has been a truly remarkable one. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Florida, she moved to Minnesota in her twenties. The combination of homesickness and a bitter winter led her to write her first published novel, "Because of Winn-Dixie." It became a runaway bestseller and received a Newberry Honor. Her second book, "The Tiger Rising," went on to become a National Book Award finalist. In 2003 DiCamillo was awarded her first Newberry Medal for her novel, "The Tale of Despereaux." It starred a tiny mouse with exceptionally large ears who was driven by love to become an unlikely hero, later inspiring an animated adventure from Universal Pictures. In 2013 she became one of only six people to be awarded two Newberry Medals, receiving her second for "Flora & Ulysses." The book garnered five starred reviews and an instant spot on the New York Times bestseller list. In addition to literary awards like the Josette Frank Award (2000), the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award (2006) and the Theodor Seuss Geisel Medal (2011), DiCamillo was appointed the U.S. National Ambassador for Young People's Literature (2014-2015) by the Library of Congress. She has nearly 30 million books in print worldwide.
