Urologist Dr. Rubinowicz Performs First Ever HIFU Procedure to Treat Prostate Cancer in PBC

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Nov. 12, 2018 - PRLog -- According to board certified urologist Dr. Diego Rubinowicz and founder of the Urology Center of Palm Beach, there has been more innovation in the field of prostate cancer over the past five years than in other areas of urology. One of those such advancements is within the treatment of prostate cancer and is HIFU or high intensity focused ultrasound. While available in Europe since the 1990s, the non-surgical and very effective treatment was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. in 2015. It has been performed in a few academic centers in the U.S. over the past two years; and in Palm Beach County specifically – this past week!

Dr. Rubinowicz, in fact, performed the first HIFU procedure in Palm Beach County at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach on Thursday, November 8, 2018. The patient was offered the treatment as a response to his diagnosis of prostate cancer and chose the minimally invasive option for its fast recover and fewer side effects.

HIFU works by deploying ultrasound waves to target cancerous tissue, heat up the temperature and eventually destroy the cancerous cell. This is a welcome change to patients as current prostate cancer treatment options include: active monitoring for development of cancer, radiation therapy, and surgery.  According to Dr. Rubinowicz, not only is the HIFU treatment minimally invasive, it is precise and can be completed during a one-time procedure. Further, it can provide cancer control, which can delay or potentially prevent indefinitely the need for surgery or radiation.
