Follow on Google News | Network Pompey Business Club - November Event - What happened?By: Network My Club Open water swim coach, swimming teacher and motivational speaker, Deborah Phillips, was guest speaker this month! She told the story of how, in 2017, she became the 1,185th person and 198th woman to swim across the English Channel, although it was not an easy or traditional journey getting there… At the age of 13, Deborah's father tragically died due to drowning in a freak accident, leaving Deborah reluctant to even go near open water. However, inspired by the 2012 Olympics, wanting to get fit and overcome her demons, she started swimming and set herself a challenge – to swim the English Channel. With her training ramping her, she was soon swimming the 7 miles stretch across the Solent, then two-way 14 mile version the following year, before, in the lead up and training schedule of the Channel swim, she was diagnosed with pneumonia. After months of recovery, hard work and gruelling training, in 2017 Deborah swam the English Channel in a time of 17 hours 53 minutes, fighting through enormous waves, tough currents and jellyfish stings along the way. A magnificent achievement itself, Deborah's Channel swim alone raised over £11,031.55 for 5 different charities, with all her long distance swims totalling £20,768 raised. Representatives from Portsmouth Football Club, Sophie Hall – Sponsorship and Account Manager – and Shaun Whitmarsh – Marketing Manager – were on hand to provide delegates with the latest information about hospitality and sponsorship opportunities available for upcoming games at Fratton Park. The final Network Pompey Business Club event of the year is the December networking lunch, taking place on Thursday 13th December, 12.30pm-2.30pm, at Fratton Park. Bookings are already open and can be made here: https://www.networkpompey.co.uk/ End
