By: Gurusoundz Bhangra Bhangra is a lively and traditional form of music and dance that originates from Punjab. Most lyrics of Bhangra are about traditional history of Punjab while others represent love and romance. The songs are in Punjabi language and have upbeat rhythm. Bhangra and Punjabi songs are an integral part of many harvest festival celebrations, weddings and many other rituals. Dhol is an integral part of bhangra and has been enjoying immense popularity all over the world not just in traditional dance forms but also as fusion in hip hop and many other forms of music. While bhangra is traditionally danced by male members, female members perform and equally amusing and funky dance called "Gidda". Bhangra Instruments The music of Bhangra is a result of many different instruments yet the most important instrument is the bhangra dhol. It is a large drum with high bass, played by beating it with two stick and worn with a thick thread around the neck. The width of the skin of dhol is about 15 inches while the size may vary among various Bhangra dhol. Other popular string instruments include sarangi, sapera, chimta, dafli, dholki and damru. The Tumbi is yet another popular Punjabi music instrument. It is a single stringed music instrument made popular by Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila. Sarangi, on the other hand, is a multi-stringed instrument, quite similar to a violin. A sapera is used to create beautiful and high pitch beats while the chimta adds a peppy and light sound to Bhangra songs. Chimta is also a famous instrument played by household ladies of Punjab during Kirtans and religious occasions. Lastly, Dhad, Dafli ,Dholki and damru belong to the Dhol family and produce more of drum like beats. While these instruments can be played by your own , ideally dhol is played by dedicated dhol players that you may have to book prior to the occasion especially in peak season of weddings and lohri. While bhangra is enjoyed in various regions of the world and not just in Punjab, Punjabi music and dhol have become an integral part of any celebrations, even in non-Punjabi communities. You can visit any local Indian classical music instruments shop in UK to understand the different varieties of dhols and other drum like instruments that produce similar sounds but with a lesser bass.
