Swedish Fabric Forest Announces New Paper Based Fabric – Used to Make Nobel Banquet Gown

Andrea Montano Montes, a Marshal at the 2018 Nobel Prize banquet, will be wearing a gown made entirely with Swedish paper. The unique fabric from which the gown is made is the result of a new and innovative production technique, which uses renewable raw materials to make a better and more environmentally friendly textile.

Fabric Forest, which is part of Svensk Konstsilke AB (SKS), today announced that it has produced a dress for this year's Nobel Prize banquet in a fabric made entirely of Swedish paper. The dress, designed by Karolina Nilsson and worn by Andrea Montano Montes, a Marshal at the banquet and a Toxicology student at Karolinska Institutet, is made with a revolutionary new fabric, made from Swedish paper from Swedish forests. This new approach to textile manufacture addresses one of the most challenging environmental issues of our time – the environmental impact of the ever- increasing textile and fabric industry.

On average, almost 10,000 liters of water are required to produce one kilogram of cotton fabric. In India alone, where more than 100 million people in India have no access to safe water, cotton production uses enough water to supply 85% of the country's people with 100 liters of water every day for a year. In addition, the insecticides and pesticides used in growing cotton damage both the earth and the people who live on it.

"Cotton is far from being the only environmental villain in textile production," says Urban Olsson CEO of SKS, "Synthetic fibers, for example, are even worse. Growing trees, on the other hand, uses only natural rainfall, and contributes to saving the environment, not destroying it."

Fiber from trees is already used to make fabrics like viscose, but such fabrics almost always need to be dry cleaned and the manufacturing process is extremely polluting and harmful to the environment. "Our goal," says Olsson, "was to create a sustainable, more environmentally friendly fabric that could be used in the textile, home furnishing, and fashion industries."

"Sweden is the world's second largest exporter of pulp, paper and sawn wood products. Finding local, sustainable uses for this industry's renewable and recyclable raw material is naturally a win-win – both for the Swedish economy and for the planet as a whole," continues Olsson. "Fabric Forest's new production technique provides the Swedish forestry and textile industries with a unique opportunity to replace fossil-based products with renewable ones – and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change in the process."

This new fabric is the final result of a cross-disciplinary project with Ahlstrom-Munksjö, Sjuhäradsbygdens Färgeri AB, Nordic-Paper, Textilhögskolan i Borås, and SmartTextiles, all of whom contributed expertise to the project. The dress was designed and sewn by Karolina Nilsson and is accessorized by a wooden pendant designed by Lena Olson.
