By: IntegraCare On January 7, Thomas turned 101 at Colonial Courtyard at Bedford, where she was honored with a party, balloons and a birthday cake. Martha even played her harmonica as part of the celebration. "Martha is a very special lady who is a ray of sunshine through our community. She celebrated a very special 101st birthday with us," said Nanette Bankes, Lifestyles Coordinator at Colonial Courtyard at Bedford. "Residents, staff and Martha's family and friends surrounded her as she blew out the candles for 101 wishes." Colonial Courtyard at Bedford presented Martha with a special hand-made card signed by the senior living community team. She also received a balloon bouquet and a sheet cake baked by Brandy Thornton, Colonial Courtyard at Bedford Food Supervisor. "Martha has resided at Colonial Courtyard at Bedford for more than 18 years and has been a gift to all through her example of daily living," Bankes said. "She thanked everyone for coming and repeatedly said she loved them. She even took time to play her favorite song on her harmonica – 'You Are My Sunshine.' Everyone sang along." Thomas grew up in Saxton, Bedford County, but spent much of her adult life in Pittsburgh. She has resided at Colonial Courtyard at Bedford for 18 years. Thomas served as a Resident Council President and is involved in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), as she plays the harmonica and sings each week on the RSVP outings. "She truly is young at heart," Bankes said. "She is a friend to all. Colonial Courtyard at Bedford thanks Martha for her spirit, her kindness and her being such a special and caring person."
