Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston to Receive the Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award at Tribute to MayorsWASHINGTON - Jan. 15, 2019 - PRLog -- The Latino Leaders Network (LLN), a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing leaders together, will convene mayors from across the country to honor Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner with the Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award at the 30th Tribute to Mayors hosted on Wednesday, January 23rd from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at The Mayflower Hotel (1127 Connecticut Avenue, NW Washington, D.C.).
The Tribute to Mayors is a private event held during the United States Conference of Mayors winter and summer meetings. Attendees will include mayors, as well as elected officials, policy-makers, corporate executives, community leaders, industry experts, and political insiders. The Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award is presented to a mayor from a city with a significant Latino population who has exhibited an outstanding commitment to bringing diverse communities together. Mayor Turner was nominated for this honor by local area Houston leaders including Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, Senator Carol Alvarado, Councilman Robert Gallegos, and Commissioner Adrian Garcia. Elected in December 2015, Sylvester Turner is serving his first four-year term as the 62nd mayor of Houston, the fourth largest city in America with a population of 2.31 million. Since taking office, Mayor Turner eliminated a $160 million budget shortfall in record time; led the city's remarkable rebound from Hurricane Harvey; championed historic pension reform; cheered on the 2017 World Series-winning Houston Astros; hosted a successful Super Bowl LI and expanded municipal investments in renewable energy. In November 2017, he received the Ohtli Award, the Mexican government's highest honor. A lifelong resident of Houston, Mayor Turner served for 27 years in the Texas House as the representative for District 139 and worked on the House Appropriations Committee for 21 years. He is a graduate of the University of Houston and earned a law degree from Harvard University.
