School is tough enough when you know how to write. Imagine being one of the 33% of students who struggle with writing letters and numbers.  This inability or difficulty is called dysgraphia. Children who suffer from dysgraphia often earn the reputation of being lazy or dumb. However, these children, like all children, want to succeed. They do not need to live lives of frustration and anxiety and a constant feeling of failing the adults they respect.

For over a decade, Cheri Dotterer has observed children with these challenges in school systems across the world. She witnessed their struggle with not only writing but also the challenging behaviors due to their feelings of defeat from the frustration.  While experiencing writing challenges as a child and becoming a professional in occupational therapy with a specialty in dysgraphia, Cheri discovered a powerful process that reduces anxiety and frustration and builds confidence and competence. In this book, you will discover:

• How the brain and body work together to create neural pathways for learning
• How different environmental features interfere with learning
• How to incorporate movement strategies into teaching both spelling and vocabulary in the regular education classroom
• How to discuss goals, accommodations, and modifications for special education Individualized Education Programs (IEP) or 504 plans.

Eliminate stress today by including these adaptive techniques into your classroom and home today!

Book Endorsement

"Cheri gives us a much-needed resource for children who struggle with written expression, and for the parents and teachers who work with them. Her unique and in-depth perspective sheds new light on a very misunderstood phenomenon."

Research

For many years, education has invested time and money into literacy.  Now, it is time to reclaim our ability to write legibly.  Children today are not getting adequate time to practice handwriting.  Problems with illegibility are increasing.  Cursive instruction is declining in many schools.  But, there is hope!  Dysgraphia Awareness is an important step towards improving children's legibility. There is a neurological connection between what we want to say and how we write.  These connections develop within us at individual rates.  However, there is a generalized developmental pattern.  For some children, the typical neural development does not mature at the rate of other children. Children with delays in handwriting skills have a written expression disorder called dysgraphia.  To explain these delays more effectively, Cheri discovered the developmental types of dysgraphia. She describes the neural process by which children learn and provides a solution for the different levels of dysfunction. These levels include the mechanical, language, and cognitive neural development associated with written expression. They are the foundation of the adaptive teaching strategies that Cheri has developed and included in the book.

Cheri has also designed a course to help teachers, occupational therapists, other school professionals, and parents take the strategies discussed in the book and apply them to any classroom whether it is a regular (general) education classroom or an autistic or learning support classroom.  These strategies examine everything from the physical environment to what the child may be preoccupied inside their won mind and enables the instructor to maximize their engagement in the classroom.

Cheri's long-term mission is to develop a research institute linking universities and classrooms around the world.  The institute will continue this research and develop a research-driven curriculum and standardized testing for written expression and further define this Specific Learning Disability. At present, the definitions from many organizations around the globe are vague and difficult to understand.  This institute will clarify the confusion around this term dysgraphia.
