BESIKTAS, Turkey - Feb. 5, 2019 - PRLog -- According to the rules of physics, the most balanced posture is the one on 4 feet, so a balanced translation should sit on the following 4 feet:
Writing an accurate and error-free text in terms of an adequate and clear vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation marks:
The target population who will read the translation to be done must be identified and the words and concepts to address to them should be selected. If the person reading the translation reads it repeatedly for he or she does not understand what he or she is reading, then it means that the translation has been made inadequately. About such a translation, I say: "It smells fishy" We need to know Turkish very well in order to express very well what we think.
The command of source language (including spelling and punctuation marks):
The translator must understand the text he reads. Because there is no "word for word" translation. We interpret what we read without going out of the subject. A sentence misunderstood or inadequately understood is naturally misinterpreted or inadequately interpreted. Also knowing two languages, for example I know German and English, is very useful in terms of comprehending what you read.
The command of professional and technical teminology:
If the target language is Turkish, the person who makes the translation should have received a technical professional training. Technical translation cannot be carried out with second-hand technical information. If the translator has a technical professional experience additional to such a training, the success rate of the translation is increased. The most important source of information for technical terminology related to source language is undoubtedly the INTERNET. Of course, you should keep in mind that there is a lot of misinformation on the internet, namely information pollution. If someone who is searching a concept on the internet is not acquainted with the subject in which this concept is used, he or she can pollute the translation that he has made with the dirty and erroneous information that he or she has drawn from this source, which can cause it "SMELL FISHY" as I call. The best part of the internet is the fact that it has both visual and video options allowing anybody to see many things.
Fast and error-free writing of the translated text
There is a race against time in translation as it is in every profession. Unfortunately, if the client is Turkish, he or she will never give the translator an adequate translation time. What is more, if the Turkish client is going to join a very close fair and have a product translation done for the fair, the tolerance for waiting goes down to almost zero. There is a saying about this: "Rome was not built in a day". The translator is expected to translate too fast as if it was a simple matter.
The translator translates a sentence that he or she will translate in a very short time with his or her eyes and mind. The translator must write that sentence, which he or she has just quickly interpreted, faultlessly in the shortest time. In other words, the translator must develop his or her writing practice on the computer.
After briefly mentioning these four aspects that the phenomenon of translation put emphasis on, I would like to convey some suggestions item by item:
- Whatever your foreign language is, add new words and concepts to your vocabulary every day. -These additions are much easier and more permanent at younger ages. As the age progresses it becomes incredibly difficult for new words to enter permanently into the overloaded human memory.
- Try to learn the target population that will read your translation.
- The sentences that you will make should be as short as possible. If you cannot shorten them, divide with commas. In technical translation, the sentences do not need to be enriched with additional words. Let novel and story translators do that.
- Describe the technical terms or terms that are not in Turkish as short as possible in the sentence and write the original of the technical concept or term in parentheses. Perhaps the one who reads the translation has an idea.
- After translating a sentence, read it quickly to see if the translated sentence is inverted and if there is a spelling mistake before starting the other sentence. Thus, you may spot many mistakes.
- Always ask for the original text to be translated from the company or person who gave you the text of the translation. Keep the original text or file at hand. Because the person who wrote the original text is also a human being and he or she can make mistakes, too. A simple example: The original text writer may forget to put a dot at the end of a sentence. So some sentences may become mixed up.
I wish success to my young translator friends in their professional lives.
