The Barger family immigrated to America from Wurttemberg, Germany in the 1770s. Just before the Civil War, in 1859, his ancestors lived on a 100-acre farm in Missouri. When the nation was divided by the Civil War, three Barger sons, James, Jesse, and Henry, joined the Missouri 26th Infantry. Their struggles and hardships were shared with family and loved ones through the letters they wrote home from the battlefields of a war-torn nation.

The soldiers' successes and failures, their abiding religious convictions, and their dedication fighting for their adopted country saw the Bargers through America's bloodiest war. This historic novel covers the period from 1825 to 1912, a time of peace, war, and upheaval in American history.

About the Author: Carl J. Barger, a retired public-school superintendent, lives in Conway, Arkansas. He is the author of "Swords and Plowshares," "Mamie, An Ozark Mountain Girl of Courage," "Cleburne County and Its People, Vol. I and II," "Dark Clouds over Alabama" and its sequel, "Blues Skies of El Dorado," and "Arkansas Hillbilly, One Man's Memoir of a Blessed Life."
