"Varying forms of pressure at work are a major cause of stress," says Segura. "We're hit with demands from others on top of the pressure that we put on ourselves to do the best job possible. Add in the fact that we don't take breaks like we should, and we're looking at a society with dangerous high blood pressure and hypertension levels." Karoshi. That's Japanese for "death by overwork." In China, the term is guolaosi. International public health consultant Dr. Cesar Chelala cited a study in which "a group of Harvard researchers found that women whose work is highly stressful have a 40 percent increased risk of heart disease compared with their less stressed colleagues." Segura notes, "Guys, don't feel left out. You're also at increased risk of 'developing and dying of cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction and stroke.' Death by overwork is a term recognized by health experts because it's happening in countries around the world—including ours." Neuroscience tells us that brains that receive ample sleep and hydration—as well as good nutrition—perform better throughout the work day. The same science also tells us that brains become inspired and renewed when we take breaks. A 2006 study by Ernst & Young found that its employees who took 10 more hours of vacation time than the average worker scored higher on year-end performance reviews. Yet in 2013, American workers used an average of only 76 percent of the vacation days given to them. "Time off from work makes us happy, and happiness makes us more productive, which makes us better at work," stated Segura. "I wrote this book for my clients who'd say, 'It's too stressful for me to leave work behind.'" Recommendations in The Great Escape include how to: •Prepare yourself and your colleagues for your absence •Set expectations about communication while you're away •Manage your re-entry into work •Plan the type of vacation that relaxes you A book launch party will be held in Segura's home base of San Antonio, Texas, on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at The Twig Bookstore at The Pearl.
