Planetary Blocks: Toy Blocks That Teach About Our Solar System

PHILADELPHIA - May 21, 2019 - PRLog -- For well over a year Chop Shop Studio has been designing and Emily Lakdawalla (Senior Editor of the Planetary Society) has been checking the data in order to produce Planetary Blocks! A set of 20 blocks featuring the most interesting worlds from our Solar System. Notice we say "worlds" and not "planets". One of the main objectives of this set is to introduce to children (and adults) that the title "planet" or not doesn't matter in terms of significance or notability. There are incredible worlds like Titan, Europa and Triton that we expect many have never even heard of. As an example, two of these worlds are bigger than the planet Mercury—and many of them significantly bigger than Pluto. These worlds are much more than grey cratered balls of rock and ice, several have vast subterranean oceans and most are geologically active with features such as geysers, volcanos and one even has lakes!

We pack each side of the blocks with data like size, distance, interior, name, appearance and feature the missions humankind have sent to explore them. There are also plans to include a fold-out supplemental of additional facts and details that children can place the blocks on to better understand what is being shown about each world.

When the project funds, Chop Shop will produce and ship the first sets out to all the Kickstarter backers in the Fall. Afterwards the sets will be sold in the official Planetary Society store just in time for the holidays. A percentage of profits will go to support the Planetary Society and their overall mission to know the cosmos and our place within it.
