The NRPA Diversity Scholarship was awarded to two individuals from underrepresented groups in the parks and recreation community who have demonstrated outstanding contributions serving diverse communities. Atkins, a public communication specialist for Broward County Parks and Recreation, is a digital marketer with a degree from the University of Florida. Through her people-first method, Atkins has been able to marketing campaigns that engage the community in socially responsible causes, increase social media followings, and produce videos that encourage people to connect with nature. At the conference, Atkins will be speaking with Dr. John Pipoly about "Living Laboratories: Dr. Pipoly holds a Ph.D in systematic biology and has published approximately 150 original research papers. His work to enhance STEAM and environmental education for sustainable development has provided a truly innovative learning experience. Through Atkins and Pipoly's lecture at the conference, Broward County Parks and Recreation hopes to encourage agencies to implement these programs in order to create a new wave of environmental leaders and position parks as incubators for the environmental revolution needed to combat climate change.
