Local seafood festival's new event date is on the horizonHot summer weather and guest feedback have event coordinators move festival date and footprint to create a more favorable experience for visitors.
By: Visit Mount Dora Although the first four years proved to be overwhelmingly successful, Visit Mount Dora's special event coordinator Janet Gamache says, "Mount Dora knows how to do events 'Right' and so it is a natural evolution for us to respond in a way to make the visitor experience better than it was the year before." Gamache says, "Besides moving the event from August to September with hopes that weather might be cooler, the festival footprint has been consolidated to one side of the lake to remove the steep incline to Evans Park. It was easy to get down to the park but coming up the hill proved to be a challenge for many guests." "There won't be less food" she quickly added. "We are partnering with Mount Dora Boating Center and Marina to place food vendors as well as cocktails and rum tasting on their property" The festival weekend will kick off with a Pirate's Ball Seafood Feast at Mount Dora Plaza Live on Thursday Sept 26 with music, dancing and an all you can eat seafood feast with lobster. Pirate costumes are encouraged. Tickets required. On Friday Sept 27 at 7pm there will be a free Pirate Party for scalawags at Magical Meat Boutique and Las Palmas Cuban Restaurant will have free Pirate Karaoke on Sat Sept 28 at 7pm. For folks interested in checking out the local fare in town, there be a Landlubber Restaurant Tour on Sat and Sun 11AM-4PM . The self guided, self paced tour will set you off with a map and will lead you to 12 different businesses. Restaurants will offer a sample of seafood from their menu and a specialty drink. Tickets required. The Mount Dora Seafood Festival was created by Visit Mount Dora, Inc to create an economic boost by bringing "feet on the street" to the the downtown district which is typically slow during the summer months. Music, fun entertainment like mermaids and pirates, a free kid zone with pirate ship and shark ride will also be offered on both days. There will be an Oyster Shucking contest on Sunday.
