Manor ISD Receives $924,297 Office of the Governor Grant to Prevent Truancy through Partnership with Communities In Schools of Central TexasThrough this grant, Manor ISD will hire a district Truancy Prevention Coordinator, and Communities In Schools will expand services from six to eleven Manor ISD campuses. CIS will also place three additional caseworkers on secondary campuses.
Students who are frequently absent from school struggle to learn. Often, unmet basic, social, and behavioral health needs are the root-cause of absenteeism. This underscores the need for a holistic, community-based approach to supporting students to help them overcome all of the challenges they face so they can be in the classroom consistently, ready to learn. MISD and CIS will provide tiered truancy prevention services at eleven Manor ISD campuses to address underlying risk factors for truancy, improve school attendance for targeted students, and improve academic outcomes. MISD will leverage the mentoring and community services offered through the district's Partners In Education program to provide layered supports for students who are at high risk for truancy. Communities In Schools programming will include schoolwide activities such as attendance rallies, anti-bullying campaigns, classroom presentations, and teacher trainings. CIS will also provide targeted services, including individual counseling and support, group counseling, crisis intervention, basic needs assistance, mentoring, tutoring, academic and attendance monitoring, parent education, and home visits. "Manor ISD is dedicated to giving every student the best possible education," said Manor Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery. "We know that students who are chronically absent are missing critical classroom instruction time and are at greatest risk of falling behind and dropping out of school. We value the expertise Communities In Schools brings to this partnership, and this grant will allow us to provide layers of support to students most at risk of truancy." Communities In Schools has partnered with Manor ISD since 2010. Communities In Schools Program Managers work full-time on campus to connect personally with students who have been referred by teachers or administrators to improve student achievement. They create a service plan based on each child's needs and then make that plan happen. They may provide individual counseling or support groups, basic life skills, access to food, clothing, and hygiene items, tutoring, mentoring, or enrichment opportunities — whatever it takes to help the child succeed. "Students who are chronically absent often have multiple, significant contributing challenges," ### About Communities In Schools of Central Texas Communities In Schools of Central Texas (CIS) works directly inside K-12 schools full time in partnership with teachers and administrators to address immediate student needs. Whether it is clean clothes, help with school work, or emotional support and counseling, CIS connects students to the relationships and resources they need to succeed. When students are hungry, experiencing homelessness, or are preoccupied with concerns for an unemployed parent or violence at home, they can't learn. That means they're disengaged in the classroom themselves, and can be a distraction to their classmates. CIS ensures that students are connected to resources to help meet basic needs like food, shelter, counseling, and clothing. The result is reduced discipline referrals and more engagement in learning, for them and their peers, letting teachers teach, and improving outcomes for all students. The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Last year, we served over 40,000 individuals in 65 schools with services ranging from mental health counseling to crisis intervention, basic needs assistance, mentoring, and academic intervention.
