Football Season is back for WOMENThe IWFFA along with the Monroe County Tourist Development Council is excited to announce the return of the 29th Annual Kelly McGillis Classic International Women's and Girls' Flag Football Championship.
By: IWFFA Founded by Diane Beruldsen in 1995, the IWFFA (formally the NWFFA) acts as an umbrella organization for teams across the globe. Representatives of the IWFFA have traveled to Central America, Asia, Europe, The Middle East, and Cuba to teach women the game, speak on leadership, and ultimately work to make a difference in the communities where women have sometimes been silenced. This tournament is presented by founder, Diane Beruldsen and the International Women's Flag Football Association. The tournament brings together players ranging from 8 years old to seniors. Teams are divided into four divisions: women highly competitive, women lower, juniors ages 12-15, and girls 8-11. Diane says, "This is not an event for just athletes, we want all women to participate. If you do not have a team, don't worry as we will have what we call our 'loose' women which consist of individuals who would like to try the sport but have not traveled with a team." Teams and participants (loose women) from all over the world will descend on the small island of Key West to demonstrate their skills in a sport that up until recently, was dominated by males. The premise behind this exciting event is to bring women from different backgrounds and cultures together in one centralized location in order to learn how to be true leaders for their communities. Football is the catalyst and women learning how to take on prominent leadership roles is the result. Although the games will be played tournament style January 23rd-26th, the festivities start with a team/participant parade and continue for an entire week. Throughout the week, participants will enjoy amazing Key West weather, attend nightly gatherings, hear dynamic women speakers who will share motivational stories, and culminate on the field with the tournament. Teams will also be able to nominate players from their division for the World Challenge game which will match up the U.S Women's All-Stars against an International All-Star team. Countries that will be represented include the United States, Canada, Pakistan, India, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico. Teams, as well as individuals, are encouraged to sign up now as the deadline to register is December 15, 2019. Everyone is accepted to play no matter your skill level or knowledge of the game. Again, this event is more about comradery than the actual winning or losing of games. If you are interested in learning more or to sign up for the event, please email Diane at iwffa@iwffa.com.
