KARACHI, Pakistan - Oct. 25, 2019 - PRLog -- Dengue fever is a mosquito borne viral infection which can be life threatening. Symptoms occur around two weeks after infection. These include high grade fever, vomiting, headache, body aches and pains and a typical rash. It is also known as break bone fever due to the severe aches and pains. In a small minority of cases (5%) it can be life threatening. Small petechiae can develop – small red spots due to breaking of the capillaries as well as a low platelet count. A low platelet count is hallmark of the disease. There may be bleeding from the mucosa and gums. The fever is saddle back: coming and going. If the fever does not resolve there may be gastrointestinal bleeding, fluid retention.

The fluid may get collected in the abdomen leading to ascites.  According to Dr Mubina Agboatwalla - A Child Specialist in Karachi (http://www.drmubinaagboatwalla.com/). The bleeding can cause haemhorrages and sudden circulatory collapse. This can result in a condition of shock. Diagnosis is by Serology . Confirmation by Dengue Antibody tests. Monitoring of platelet count is essential for management and further progress. The mainstay of treatment is maintaining hydration, give anti pyretics and supportive treatment. Monitoring of platelet count and if need be platelet transfusion. The symptoms last for about a week. Recovery is complete. Prevention is mainly staying away from mosquitoes. Covering legs and arms specially after dark.
