By: 9 The Gallery The title of the show is inspired by the name of 16th century human anatomy book, De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem, Latin for On the Fabric of the Human Body, by Andreas Vesalius. The atlas depicts realistic figures in allegorical poses, often in nature, with their anatomy exposed—this serves as an accurate visual metaphor of what this body of work investigates: Peter Lawrence is an award-winning medical illustrator and visual artist. He currently works at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, where he provides media expertise for academic publishing to support residents, attending physicians, and researchers in neuroscience. Lawrence studied drawing and painting at George Mason University, where, by chance, he got the opportunity to observe and sketch surgical procedures within the operating room at the University hospital. Shortly thereafter, he discovered the field of medical illustration, and decided to attend the medical illustration graduate program at Medical College of Georgia. It was there, while taking a gross anatomy dissection course, that Lawrence became fascinated with the human brain. Lawrence specialized in neurosurgery and has been working as a professional medical illustrator in Phoenix for over 3 years. Peter M. Lawrence: On the Fabric of the Human Skull runs through the month of November in the Lounge at {9} The Gallery. {9} The Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in Phoenix's Historic Grand Avenue District.
