School Business Leaders Gather Together for Annual Conference and Expo

ESSA and Other Hot Education Issues Covered at ASBO International Conference for SBOs

ASHBURN, Va. - Nov. 13, 2019 - PRLog -- Internal controls, budgeting to optimize student achievement, and best practices for complying with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which links budgeting, student success, and community trust together, were among the key topics of the 2019 Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) Annual Conference & Expo in National Harbor, Maryland, October 25–28.

The conference drew over a thousand attendees from around the world and provided school business leaders with four days of professional development, collaboration, and opportunities to preview programs, services, and resources for efficient and effective school district operations and management.

"Leveraging School Financial Data to Improve Outcomes and Create Messaging that Builds Trust" was one of the top attended sessions at this year's conference. Presented by Elizabeth Ross, Research Associate for The Edunomics Lab at Georgetown University, and Shana Wang, Budget Strategy Specialist for D.C. Public Schools, the session shared insights about the new financial data and community conversations that may arise as districts publish their ESSA report cards and comply with the law's new reporting requirements. Specifically, attendees learned how to use data to better inform decisions about improving student achievement and how to facilitate open, honest discussions with stakeholders about school finance to build transparency and trust around district spending.

"The great thing about ASBO's annual conference is that school business officials from diverse school systems can share what issues are impacting them, learn from peers, and sharpen their skills," says ASBO International Executive Director David Lewis. "Whether they're seeking better ways to build their budget, understand how federal issues impact their schools, effectively lead staff, or build better community relationships, they can find it all here. SBOs aren't just responsible for the bottom line—they do everything to support staff and students, including accounting and budgeting, facilities management, school safety, and more. This conference is where school business leaders come to receive a wide range of professional development for their specific needs."

ASBO International's 2020 Annual Conference and Expo will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, October 2–5. For more information, visit https://asbointl.org/AnnualConference.
