C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment's Travel Salary Index – October 2019

• Near record high for new travel job wages
• Big 22 per cent monthly rise in job seekers
• Vacancies also increase

Strong month for salaries

The average salary for a new job in travel jumped by 3.87 per cent in October to very nearly set a new record high, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment which surveyed all new vacancies registered with the companies during the month.

The figure of £29,280 was just £6 below the record amount reached in June and means that the 12-month average now stands at plus 5.78 per cent.

Wages for standard travel jobs (those paying up to £40,000) saw an even bigger monthly jump of 4.59 per cent to also reach their second highest level since the index began in 2012. The average figure of £25,965 is behind only June 2018's £26,099 with the 12-month rolling average standing at plus 4.19 per cent.

It was a positive month across the country for travel salaries, with the south seeing a 4.48 per cent monthly rise and the north recording an increase of 3.66 per cent.

Candidates and vacancies both rise again

In terms of activity, the fallout from Thomas Cook's collapse contributed to more new candidates registering in October than at any point in 2019, with the month seeing a big 22 per cent rise from September. Meanwhile, with a five per cent monthly rise, the number of new travel jobs being created has now increased for three months in a row.

Speaking about the stats, Barbara Kolosinska, Director at C&M Travel Recruitment (http://www.candm.co.uk/) and C&M Executive Recruitment, said: "October was a very positive month all round for travel recruitment, with candidates, vacancies and salaries all rising. Wages have now increased year-on-year for the past 17 months in a row, but this is because of the lack of candidates looking to change roles. There are now signs that this appears to be slowly changing and that candidates are beginning to explore job opportunities again, but what we need to see is consistency.

"Concerns around the general election and Brexit are continuing to hamper the travel recruitment market, but with salaries at near-record levels, there are many fantastic career openings available for the right applicants."
