EqOpTech Deploys Refurbished Laptops to Benefit Mountain View Students

Equal Opportunity Technology (or EqOpTech) enables free, equal access to technology and STEM education while engaging student volunteers to make the community more equitable.

LOS ALTOS, Calif. - Nov. 20, 2019 - PRLog -- EqOpTech, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, plans to deploy up to 300 refurbished laptops in collaboration with Mariano Castro Elementary School of Mountain View to benefit students in need on November 22, 2019.

Since 2016, EqOpTech has teamed up with tech companies, local schools, and other service organizations to redeploy used laptops, as part of an ongoing computer reuse initiative to benefit needy students and minimize e-waste.

"We look forward to help narrow the digital divide with free access to refurbished laptops for online homework and research," said Terence Lee, Founder of EqOpTech. "Our equal opportunity program also provides opportunities for youth to learn important technical skills while engaging them in community service."

Technology-Infused Education

Technology is deeply integrated into 21st-century project-based learning. Students leverage tools from Google applications to creating iMovies or TED talks, while teachers use tools like Edmodo, Membean, and Google Classroom to foster collaboration and student engagement. Beyond the physical classroom, modern learning extends into a virtual classroom where students collaborate with classmates to prepare for presentations and in-class discussions.

With equal access to computer devices, students can now complete online assignments as well as log into their Clever account to engage in computer-driven adaptive and personalized programs - such as Lexia Core 5 Reading, ST Math, and Khan Academy - that aim to close the achievement gap. Personalized digital resources target skill gaps and create learning experiences that are tailored to students' interests, needs, and skills.

Students Helping Students

EqOpTech not only helps close the technology gap but also provides a platform for students in technology to gain technical skills and meaningful work experience. EqOpTech mentors and trains volunteers to revive older laptops to help local students in need. Through a series of summer workshops and school club meetings, volunteers learn how to restore laptops to their full functionality with an operating system and removal of all personal data.

Create a Permanent Change

The education divide is rooted in unequal access to technology. Leveling the playing field in education and technology will permanently change education for the better. Through collaborations with school clubs and service organizations, EqOpTech empowers students with technology tools and expose young learners to develop early STEM skills so they can effectively compete in STEM education.
