By: LexisNexis The event commenced with Mr. Mahendra Chaturvedi, Sales Director, LexisNexis India giving a very warm Welcome Address to the distinguished gathering. This was followed by the captivating words by Mr. Mahesh Rangarajan. The opening remarks came from Dr. Ashwani Kumar, "I am overwhelmed by your gracious presence here this afternoon and express my deepest gratitude to each one of the distinguished guests present". He further enlightened the audience about the theme of the book and quoted, "The book provides a peek into the studied reflections on some of the pressing issues of our time. A passionate appeal for freedom, dignity and justice, polished by a deep concern for sanctity of the Constitutional order is its defining distinction" On the occasion, Dr. Manmohan Singh said, "In recent days, young people across the country have reminded us that freedom is best secured in the custody of enlightened citizens and when it is protected for all. The institutions of liberal and libertarian democracy have been put to test on several occasions when fundamental freedoms were threatened. These institutions, nurtured over the years, need to be strengthened and must assert themselves in defence of the Constitution. This is an important message of the author who has spent a lifetime in the study and practice of law,". Hon'ble Shri M. Hamid Ansari said the State often violated the citizen's dignity with impunity. "India is going through a transformation. The young generation has its own vocabulary for seeking dignity in structuring their future. We need to understand and accommodate it,". Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, unveiled the book, said it was "structured around topical issues". In the audience were former finance minister P. Chidambaram, former diplomat Meira Kumar and veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani. Hon'ble Shri N N Vohra said there had been a continuous decline in all the organs of democracy. The general level of awareness among the public has increased but their awareness of fundamental duties is lacking". Towards the end of the event author Ashwani Kumar, in his remarks, said somewhere along the line, the institutional response to challenging situations has been found wanting.
