Follow on Google News | Humboldt Community Business Development Center (HCBDC) Launches Workforce Training WorshopsThe Humboldt Community Business Development Center (HCBDC) is launching a series of workforce training workshops aimed at empowering the alternative agriculture industry in Humboldt County.
Natalynne DeLapp is Executive Director of HCBDC. She hopes that the workshops will "provide key learning outcomes to help cannabis businesses become more solvent, resilient, and ultimately to thrive in the newly legalized, taxed and regulated paradigm." HCBDC received funding from the Headwaters Fund to develop low-cost professional training workshops for independent cannabis businesses. Since its inception in 2000, the Headwaters Fund has sought to provide funding in the form of grants and loans to support economic development and quality of life in Humboldt County. Using the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) as a guideline, Headwaters Fund allocations are set annually and are based on interest earned in prior years. Kenny Spain, Executive Director of Headwaters Fund explains that "because of federal funding restrictions, you cannot say you're in cannabis and learn skills. We want to help the legal alternative agriculture businesses in Humboldt County and encourage this industry cluster to apply for funding. Our hope is to stabilize the industry." Working closely with other community organizations such as North Coast Small Business Development Center and College of the Redwoods, HCBDC's offerings include a series on Human Resources, Budgeting, Sexual Harassment Avoidance Training, Leadership Skills and OSHA for the newly regulated cannabis industry. Andelain Roy from DewPoint farms attended the workshop. "I'm thankful that these workshops are offered," she says. "After attending, I feel more confident in how I approach Human Resources needs in my business. A lot of cannabis businesses in Humboldt need the opportunity to grow, and the workshop provided quality resources." For Donna Wright, CEO and President of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce, "it's thrilling that the cannabis industry sees value in joining regional partners. Our mission is to promote trade and commerce, and to support our members. Cannabis is an important part of this."
