PRLog -- Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc. (SEM Link), will join #Give828 Day formally known as #GivingBlackDay, a national day of giving focused specifically on supporting black-led and black-benefiting organizations. "Black-
led organizations are often formed to serve unmet needs in our communities. While frequently underfunded, we leverage sweat equity and cultural competency to bridge gaps and create new opportunities. In line with this approach, giving to SEM Link is critical because we serve with passion and compassion and out of a sense of responsibility to reach and inspire our next generation of STEM professionals,"
states Rufus R. Little, III, SEM Link, Chairman of the Board of Directors. #Give828 Day, which takes place on Friday, August 28th, is not like other fundraising campaigns. This day takes place during Black Philanthropy Month, and multiple important historical landmarks in Black American's march towards freedom.
- August 28, 1955: 14-year-old Emmett Till was brutally murdered by three white men, which became a "flashpoint in the civil rights movement."
- August 28, 1963: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his iconic "I Have A Dream" speech in Washington, D.C.
- August 28, 2005: Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana. The storm, which devastated New Orleans, inordinately impacted many of the city's black residents.
- August 28, 2008: Then-Senator Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president, becoming the first black man to ever win the nomination and bid for the presidency.
#Give828 Day 2020 comes at a critical time. Between the global pandemic and the current movement for racial justice, now is the time to amplify the work of Black-led, Black benefiting nonprofit organizations who are empowering Black people in all facets of life. The pandemic has highlighted the racial inequities, in our community and the philanthropic sector is not exempt. Black-led and Black-benefiting organizations are historically underfunded by the philanthropic sector and individual donors. Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofit organization need individuals to make investments into our organizations so that we can make investments in our communities. Due to the pandemic, SEM Link has transitioned to virtual programming through our social media platforms and hosting virtual STEM events. However, just like any other year, SEM Link needs the financial support of individuals that believe in our work to provide resources for our programs and operations.
