Getting a COVID-19 Test and an Antibody Test Done

People who have been infected with this kind of virus and have had close contact with an infected person need to get tested immediate.

LONDON - Sept. 14, 2020 - PRLog -- A nasal swab test will help to determine if an individual is having coronavirus or COVID-19.

•    The tests for COVID-19 consist of polymerase chain reaction or PCR diagnostic test which is actually a nasal swab.
•    There has been an antibody test or blood test that can tell if you have had an infection earlier.
•    The incubation period for this new coronavirus is nearly 5 to 7 days, but it might be for almost 14 days.

With more testing for COVID-19 , you might be thinking if you need to get tested.  The testing for COVID-19 consists of the polymerase chain reaction or PCR diagnostic test which is actually a nasal swab. There is the antibody test or a blood test that will help to identify if you had an infection earlier. So, do you need to wait till you develop the symptoms and then get yourself tested? Is it worthy enough to find out if you had an infection in the past?

How you can get tested for COVID-19

People who have been infected with this kind of virus and have had close contact with an infected person need to get tested even though they do or do not develop the symptoms.

According to Amira Roess, PhD, a professor of global health and epidemiology at George Mason University, told Healthline, "By identifying individuals who are positive early in disease progression before they develop symptoms and implementing public health interventions, we can prevent a large percentage of infections. This is key, because we have learned that asymptomatic infection is a key driver of this epidemic," she said. "Finding asymptomatic individuals will allow us to prevent them from spreading the virus."

Inspite of a positive COVID-19 PCR test, studies reveal some people believe there had been little or no culturable virus after nearly 9 to 10 days. This means a person who already had an infection with this virus but tested positive long after they had no longer infections to others. However, PCR might be positive for several weeks after active infection.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if you test positive, then this means you will have to isolate yourself at home for 10 days. Dr. Sophia Yohe, director of the University of Minnesota Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory and medical director for the Fairview/M Health COVID-19 testing lab, points out that the test can help only when you stay active in protecting yourself and others.
