ARLINGTON, Va. - Oct. 29, 2020 - PRLog -- This week's HOT-Seat topic is one hitting home with anyone who has lost a limb but tries to imagine the small child, toddler having to have these decisions made for the overall better quality of life. Parents of children with physical disabilities are often taken aback at how insensitive passers-by can be when someone with differences is amongst them.

We all have differences, but limb differences are noticeable, almost like skin color, except you can hide it with prosthetics and new technology so advanced that no one would ever know that you or a family member is an amputee. Today's medical advances are fantastic and mind-blowing at the same time.

Paige Thomas-Minor, Active Duty, U. S. Marine Corps Officer, hails from a small city, Coatesville, Pa, with a career spanning 20 plus years of worldwide travel, combat, and humanitarian deployments. She now resides in Northern Virginia with her two children, one of which has unique needs.  Balancing the active-duty military as an amputee family is not easy, but Ms. Thomas takes her responsibility and role as a mom seriously. She uses her highly disciplined mindset and skills to get it all done.

Paisley, 3-years old, was born with a rare medical condition found in 1 and 1 million births affecting lower limbs and is clinically diagnosed with the most severe form of Tibial Hemimelia. As a result, Paisley's lower legs and feet were amputated in 2019 to maximize her quality of life and ability to run, jump, and play.

The tibia is the inner bone of the two bones that make up the lower leg and connect the ankle to the knee. If part or all of the tibial bone is missing, it could be due to this rare birth-defect found in little Paisley.

She's had a significant impact on Paige's outlook on life and work-life-home balance. Ms. Thomas is now an advocate for limb differences awareness and promotes events, fundraisers, and education through her family's journey as an amputee family.

Paige Thomas-Minor is in the HOT-Seat at Urban Academics this Thursday at 9:30 PM (EDT).  Come and hear the triumphant story of how a superhero is synonymous with mom, and military.  A place is set for you to join us at the table for Urban Intellectual Talk in 2020: Dial-In Number: 605.472.5272 and Access Pin Number: 836692.
