NEW YORK - Jan. 26, 2021 - PRLog -- During the early days of the COVID crisis in March 2020, The City Tutors (CT), a Queens-based volunteer tutor and mentor nonprofit with a citywide reach, established The City Mentor Program after seeing current CUNY students and recent college graduates facing great uncertainties about their prospects to secure internships and jobs. Many lacked access to industry insiders who could help review their materials and assist with career exploration. The City Tutors' City Mentor Program sought to change that by providing working professionals and companies the opportunity to support New Yorkers from communities historically underserved and especially vulnerable to job market challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 70% of mentorship beneficiaries in the City Mentor program are persons of color.

ViacomCBS, IBM, Goldman Sachs, Citi, and Sidley Austin are some of the major corporate partners who have partnered with City Tutors in this effort.

CT largely serves 16–24-year-olds who are currently in high school, college, or are recently graduated. The City Mentor program also serves career changes interested in tech. Since starting, the program has facilitated over 750 mentorships (over 1400 sessions) and has connected hundreds of students with mentors during days of service events. The program has over 250 mentors, from across such industries, as finance/business, healthcare, law, marketing/advertising, tech, education, publishing, nonprofit, and government.

"City Mentors connected me with two generous and supportive people, one a software engineer and the other a recruiter. Over the course of a few meetings, they helped me to gain confidence, develop a strategy for my continued learning and job search, and offered me a chance to ask questions and receive insight shaped by real-world experiences," said a CUNY City Mentee participant.

Some of the services The City Mentor Program offers include assistance with creating or revising resumes, cover letters, or LinkedIn and assisting with interview prep and networking with industry professionals from areas of interest.

"Our goal ensures no one gets left behind, and that everyone has resources available to them. We want to bring equitable access to these resources for communities that have been historically underserved," stated Garri Rivkin, Executive Director of The City Tutors.
