Space Gets Serious: Opening of the Center for Planetary Identity

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - Feb. 25, 2021 - PRLog -- Many astronauts have spoken about how seeing the Earth in space led to changes in their perspectives on many world challenges, an experience called "the Overview Effect" in the space community.  Some have even said that it enlarged their sense of identification from their place of birth or residence to the Earth itself.  "Planetary Identity" is at the core of the Overview Effect.

The Center for Planetary Identity launched a new website with the mission of bringing a greater sense of reality of our mutual existence on a planet, which will change world culture into one with a newer, more inclusive sense of personal identity.

The Center is led by David Beaver, the initiator, co-founder, and Chief Cognitive Researcher of the Overview Institute (which brought the Overview Effect into wider public awareness); and JP Chastain, Media Producer and Digital Media Director of the Institute. According to Beaver, "At a time when extreme nationalism, xenophobia, tribalism, and other separative forces fragment efforts at solutions to rising global challenges, we need a cognitive science-based understanding of the worldview shift that space brings.  This is the Center's mission."

Today's world is faced with increasing global-scale challenges and crises; pandemics, climate change, international conflicts (some involving nuclear-armed nations), food, water, and power shortages, rising income inequality, and more; challenges that no single nation can solve alone. Planetary Identity includes all the seven and a half billion "citizens of the planet", the entire collection of nations, and all of the natural world - the environment in which the human world is embedded, and out of which it arose
