SYNOPSIS:

Britain, 1985, a country divided and at war with itself. In South Wales, during the miners' strike, a besieged mining village faces a serial killer who stalks and kills young women members of a Trotskyist group. But the killer, a one-time state assassin, has a still darker secret having previously murdered the witnesses to an officially connected paedophile ring in North Wales.

Can Detective Sergeant Terry Vaughan, son of a dying former miner and with his brother an NUM militant, catch the killer? And what happens when the murderer's warped agenda of revenge against the powerful starts to merge with Terry's own?

The murderer taunts the police in cryptic messages in which he calls himself Azazeel, the fallen angel that aligned to Satan himself, in the Book of Enoch and Milton's Paradise Lost. He stalks and murders young women in the besieged mining villages of the Rhondda, who are members of the same Trotskyist sect. But they are also the sexual conquests of Seamus O'Leary, the 80 year old thuggish but charismatic leader of the Trotskyist sect.

For Detective Sergeant Terry Ackrington, the murders couldn't come at a worse time. His wife pregnant, Terry is almost at war with his own family, let alone the community that he has sworn to serve, now under de facto military occupation by Police Support Units. Under pressure from his family to hand in his papers, on the one hand, and from his ambitious young wife and colleagues on the other he is made joint leading investigator in the killings together with odious Special Branch detective Dermot Brady.

Meanwhile, Terry's boss, DCI Ridgeway, a former member of the Metropolitan Police Flying Squad, also has something to hide and is working to an agenda of his own. To add to Terry's problems his Dad, a former miner, is dying of silicosis while his striking miner brother, Johnny, has joined O'Leary'sTrotskyist sect and is in thrall of TV soap star heart throb Zack Miller.

When Johnny turns against Zack and joins the team, they find themselves in a race against time to save the most recently abducted girl and expose the truth. But then Terry's own pregnant wife is abducted and a cabal cops move in for the kill.
