Corporate Donations to Black Lives Matter Total $67 Billion

WASHINGTON - June 24, 2021 - PRLog -- The murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 sparked an immense global outcry for racial equity. Protests erupted across the world pleading for justice and the legitimization of the rights of Black people. Popularly referred to as the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement, this outpouring of support dominated the American national conversation as millions of Americans demanded accountability and an end to racial injustice. BLM demonstrations took place in 4,446 cities from May 25, 2020 to November 18, 2020.

Crucially, the private sector reacted at a level largely unseen and unheard of prior to Mr. Floyd's murder, as the vast majority of businesses posted messages of solidarity on social media. These entities sent employees and stakeholders messages and other communications in support of racial justice. Further, many made financial commitments to the Black community and organizations advocating racial equity. These pledges received great attention and praise, as corporations dug into their own treasuries to help the Black community.

Creative Investment Research was among the first to calculate and publish accurate, well documented estimates for total BLM donations. We also were the first to compare these donations to donor net income.

As of Thursday, June 24, 2021, 261 corporations have pledged $67.186 billion to BLM. We estimate that cash disbursed so far totals $652 million. Net income for the firms making pledges equals $747.5 billion, BLM pledges represent 8.9% of net income.
