Follow on Google News | Local Farm Making Produce Accessible at NW Indiana BusinessesBy: Rainfield Farm In the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model consumers and farmers work together. Farm "members" pay an upfront fee in the spring for a "share" of the season's harvest, which is delivered weekly during the growing season. "We've been following this initiative in areas throughout the nation and with its success we are excited to start it here in NW Indiana." said Shane Hansen, Owner of Rainfield Farm, "Workplace CSA is a way for businesses to help support small family farms, employee health, and a robust local food system." Rainfield Farm works with companies, free of charge, to help determine site logistics and assist with farmer relationship development. Rainfield Farm's Workplace CSA Toolkit includes step-by-step instructions and templates for surveys and employee outreach to make it as easy as possible to start a Workplace CSA program. In 2018, Rainfield Farm started working closely with Fronius (Portage, IN) as a pilot program. They were concerned with lowering their health care costs, and had created a robust workplace CSA program as part of its wellness initiatives such as their yoga classes and pollinator gardens. In 2022, Rainfield Farm will expand Workplace CSA support to companies located throughout NW Indiana. For the past 6 years Rainfield Farm has worked alongside the NWI Food Council and has acted as a vehicle for organizing farms, training farmers, educating the community, and recruiting new farm customers to keep farms economically viable.
