LAS VEGAS - March 2, 2022 - PRLog -- The Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) organization designates every March as National Nutritional Month, and to help parents get a handle on better and healthier eating habits, Las Vegas Urban League Nutrition Education counselors are available 24/7 to provide valuable information to help families meet their nutritional goals.

"Start your day with a healthy breakfast that includes lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables," Rewina Tsegay, WIC's Program Nutritionist, said. "Make a breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, low-fat cheese, salsa and a whole wheat tortilla for example. Watch your portion sizes by making half your plate fruits and vegetables."

Maintaining regular physical activity is also very important. The RDN recommends that children and teenagers get 60 or more minutes of physical activity a day and adults at least 1 1/2 hours per week. And if you can't go to the gym, taking walks in the neighborhood in the morning or after dinner are just as good.

Tsegay suggests, "Fix healthy snacks; "such snacks can sustain energy levels between meals and can include raw veggies with low-fat cottage cheese or hummus, or a tablespoon of nut or seed butter with an apple or banana. Stay hydrated by drinking more water and avoiding drinks with added sugars."

"Sea foods such as salmon, trout, oysters and sardines have a whole range of nutrients such as omega-3 fats," Tsegay added. "Slow down at mealtime by eating as a family, turning the television and phones off, as well as other electronic devices. By taking more time and concentrating on your foods, this will have a more positive effect on your food intake and your body as a whole."

"By balancing your plate with a variety of healthy foods prepared at home, you can also maintain a healthier weight," Tsegay said. "Another good tip is to quit eating before you feel full or stuffed. Switching from large plates to a smaller one will also help you learn how to control your portion sizes."

If you need help in planning your daily diet, WIC recommends consulting its Nutritionist and registered dietitians. Pregnant women are especially encouraged to enroll anytime in WIC programs to obtain proper education counseling and nutritional supplemental food advice.
