| Global Learning Charter Public School Five Year Charter RenewedBy: PR First Charter schools in Massachusetts go through a rigorous authorization process in order to open. They also go through an equally rigorous renewal process every five years, with multiple check-ins within those intervals. Consistent with charter school regulations, the review of the school's Application for Renewal for another five-year term is guided by evidence regarding the success of the school's academic program, the viability of the school as an organization, and the faithfulness of the school to the terms of its charter. The Commissioner's recommendations consider each school's performance at the time of the charter renewal as well as the progress it has made during the past four years of operation. The evaluation includes a review of evidence such as the school's academic performance, Accountability Plan performance, annual reports, financial record, and Application for Renewal, as well as assessments conducted by the Department of Education. "We are pleased to have met all of the necessary criteria and continue to stay true to our charter's mission," said Dr. Stephen Furtado, Executive Director of GLCPS. "This is an important time in our mission as we look forward to creating one campus with the opening of the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for STEAM Education this year." About Global Learning Public Charter School Open to New Bedford residents, Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) is a tuition-free public charter school that currently serves 500 students in grades 5-12. Launched in 2002 as a Horace Mann charter school, GLCPS became a Commonwealth charter school in 2006. In order to generate a culture of personalization, the school setting and class sizes are deliberately small. Students, faculty and administration know each other well and teachers are able to tailor the curriculum to the needs and level of each student. GLCPS offers an exciting and challenging interdisciplinary curriculum that follows and builds upon the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Students learn to work collaboratively in teams, use technology meaningfully in their coursework, strengthen all elements of their communication skills, as well as develop the necessary skills to become engaged and ethical contributors to a global society. GLCPS capitalizes on the exceptional resources of the region (for example, marine sciences), and ties these resources to their curriculum and instruction.
