Fourth Ward Dog Park opens- Shirley Cress Dudley honoredBy: SCD Shirley Cress Dudley started the process in 2018 Fourth Ward resident, Shirley Cress Dudley, moved to the area in December of 2017. She quickly found that there was not any safe place for dogs to play, off the leash, inside Fourth Ward. In August of 2018, she filed a petition with Change.org, then presented the petition, with over 350 signatures, to the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and the Fourth Ward neighborhood and foundation president. It was a 3 1/2 years process involving back and forth correspondence with the county, providing names of interested dog owners, photos of dogs playing, choices of possible park sites, and repeated reminders. The park is now opened, fully paid for by Mecklenburg County taxpayer dollars. A plaque will be mounted in the park, honoring Ms. Dudley for her efforts.
