Fourth Ward Dog Park opens- Shirley Cress Dudley honored

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - March 23, 2022 - PRLog -- Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec have opened an urban dog park in Fourth Ward, Charlotte. The park, located on 9th Street, is open to owners of large and small dogs. There is also a section for watching the dogs. The park is one block from the popular neighborhood restaurant Alexander and Michaels.

Shirley Cress Dudley started the process in 2018
Fourth Ward resident, Shirley Cress Dudley, moved to the area in December of 2017. She quickly found that there was not any safe place for dogs to play, off the leash, inside Fourth Ward. In August of 2018, she filed a petition with Change.org, then presented the petition, with over 350 signatures, to the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and the Fourth Ward neighborhood and foundation president.

It was a 3 1/2 years process involving back and forth correspondence with the county, providing names of interested dog owners, photos of dogs playing, choices of possible park sites, and repeated reminders. The park is now opened, fully paid for by Mecklenburg County taxpayer dollars. A plaque will be mounted in the park, honoring Ms. Dudley for her efforts.

The park will be used as a model for future Charlotte urban dog parks. The park is open from sunrise to sunset daily.
